How we make tinctures
We specialize in fresh plant tinctures. But an excellent tincture can only be made using excellent plant-material. Excellent plant-material for tinctures means high in plant-ingredients, low in water content, without foreign particles (pesticides/herbicides/fertilizer-residues). Therefore our production is organic certified and with added improvements for medicinal plant production. These include the use of nitrogen-fixating plants, minimal or no irrigation, even cultivation with electrically propelled tractors. Organic production prevents any possibility of extraction of pesticides into the tincture. Also sturdy slow grown plants are ideal raw material for extraction.
Plant-ingredients are significantly influenced by the climate in which the plant grows. Plenty of sun, low rainfall, but also significant temperature differences between day and night are favourable for many medicinal plants. That is just the climate we have in Tasmania.
The freshly harvested plant-part is immediately cut an immersed, before wilting can occur, into the ethanol/water solvent (menstruum). Ethanol is used already during the cutting process to prevent oxidation. Then only is extraction and preservation possible of the original unaltered ingredients as they were in the living plant.
Change (especially oxidation) is minimized compared to cutting, drying and storage of dried plants. For tender parts, flowers, young shoots, some leaves (birch) only 25-30% ethanol is used. On the contrary up to 90% ethanol extraction is needed for certain roots like ginseng or high essential oil species as in anise seed tincture.
To maintain a consistent high level of quality, standardization and optimalisation from the start of sowing the seed to making the tincture is necessary. Large variations in tincture-batch quality prevents efficient use (uniform dosage prescriptions) of tinctures. Our tinctures are made according to existing pharmacopees or literature or on the basis of customer-specifications.
We prefer to use the German Homeopathic Pharmacopee (HAP/GHP). This pharmacopee provides the specifications for many fresh plant tinctures and plant-parts used. The tinctures we make are mentioned in the GHP as mothertinctures. We do however not perform any homeopathic treatments like potentiating of the mothertinctures.
Our tinctures are regardes as 'mothertinctures', 'phytotherapeutic tinctures', homeopathic mothertinctures', food-additives and feed-additives.

rec 3 = 66% rec 4= 70-90% . Ethanol content is chosen for optimal extraction of the plant/plant part used. - org cert: Our med. plants cultivation and processing is organic certified (ACO/ for AU, EU and USA). A minority of tinctures is from conventional sources or wild harvested.
- fresh/versus dried plant tincture: A fresh plant tincture is made immediately from the original plant material, not altered by drying or milling. Its contents are closest to the fresh plant itself. Fresh plant preparations have been successfully used for the same reasons as dried plant tinctures
